Prizm Hobby Update

Prizm Hobby Update

The NBA season is rapidly approaching, and that means NBA Prizm cards are selling at all-time highs! People are still chasing Luka Doncic, Trae Young, Zion Williamson, Ja Morant & more. With Prizm

Hobby box prices through the roof, let’s take a look at how we got here…

2018-2019 - When Prizm first released in 2012 no one expected for it to become what it

is today. Two years ago, when 2018 Prizm was released you were still able to go into local stores

(like Target and Walmart) and buy blasters, cellos, and mega boxes at decent prices. When hobby boxes released; they were around $600 with people slowly getting back into the hobby. That price was not likely to stay there. Now Hobby boxes are selling for around $7,500 for a single box and a case for $90,000! We have seen prices for singles exceed expectations as well. Players like Luka and Trae silvers were selling around $350-$400. Now Trae silvers are selling for around $3,500; while Luka silver 10’s are pushing $9-10,000! People are chasing big name rookies and paying big money! Notable players in 2018-2019: Luka Doncic, Trae Young, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Michael Porter Jr, Deandre Ayton, and Marvin Bagley III.

2019-2020 - This is where things get interesting… one of the most talked about players since Lebron James came into this year’s Prizm, Zion Williamson. Zion was highly touted as one of the biggest super-stars to ever come out of Duke. We have watched highlights of this kid since high school and now we finally get to watch him on the big stage. However, prices of NBA Prizm hobby boxes do not reflect that. When Prizm was released it was still only around $400 for a box. Current prices of Hobby boxes are selling at $3,750 per box, and $45,000 for a case. What does this mean? Next year, will we see an increase like we did for 2018? Is the hobby just not as invested in this year’s class? I think now is a great time to purchase these boxes and hold for next year’s class to come in. Let’s wait and see how these players perform their sophomore year. Notable players in 2019-2020: Zion Williamson, Ja Morant, RJ Barrett, Coby White, Tyler Herro, Rui Hachimura, & Darius Garland. With NBA Prizm 2020-2021 releasing later in the season, we could see price increases of 2019 products to keep people busy in anticipation of new releases.
